In the heart of the Abruzzo region in the southeast of Italy, Cascina del Colle winery has been providing top-tier wines for around 25 years. It’s owned and operated by the D’Onofrio family, who are now three generations deep in their wine-making journey.

The name Cascina del Colle roughly translates to “Farmhouse on the hill”, and the 16 hectares on which the D’Onofrio’s grow their grapes are defined by the hilly terroir. The vineyards dotting the municipality of Villamagna have an average elevation of 250 metres above sea level - perfect for growing tart and juicy Montepulciano.

It is medium-bodied, with a rich nose of plum, blackcurrant jam, chocolate and earthy forest floor. It has a wonderfully round texture in the mouth, with flavours that mirror the opening bouquet. Look out for black and red fruits, coupled with herbaceous sage and a slight umami taste, reminiscent of hoisin sauce. The finish is long-lasting, with a distinctively acidic tail. Like most of the best Montepulciano’s, this wine is ready to be enjoyed straight away, but can also be cellared for a few more years. It is a great wine to pair with food - consider having it with a wholesome, tomato-rich pasta dish, or enjoy it on a pizza night with family and friends.
