Quinta do Crasto Superior Tinto 2015

This stunning Portugese winery is set on the right bank of the Douro River and has a history which dates back to the ancient Romans since the name “crasto” means “Roman fort”. Currently owned by Leonor and Jorge Roquette, the property has been in the same family for over a century and boasts some 70 hectares of vineyards. The winery is well-known around the world thanks to its famed swimming pool which was designed by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura.

Quinta do Crasto’s vineyards are planted at an altitude of up to 600 metres on south-facing slopes where conditions are ideal for producing intensely-concentrated grapes. This stunning wine is a great example of the dry red wines made from local varieties coming out of the Douro these days. The grapes are carefully selected on arrival at the winery and vinified in stainless steel tanks. The young wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.

The result is a robust and powerful red with ample dark fruit character. The nose is bursting with cassis and blackberry notes along with hints of cocoa and toast from the oak. Hearty and well-structured on the palate, this is a great wine to serve with red meats and barbecued foods.
