Self-taught winemaker Charles Smith spent his younger years managing rock bands and touring Europe on the concert circuit. While living the rock star lifestyle, he developed a love of fine wine and dining which would eventually spark a radical career change. Upon his return to the United States, Smith founded his very own winery and produced his first 300 cases of wine in 2001 in Washington State’s Walla Walla Valley.
Over the past few decades Smith’s wines have been praised by top international winemakers and Smith himself has been named Winemaker of the Year by Food & Wine magazine, Wine Enthusiast, and Seattle Magazine. The Creator is a superb example of Smith’s winemaking talent, crafted from top quality fruit from the Powerline vineyard located in the Blue Mountains of Walla Walla Valley AVA.
This powerful red is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon along with a smaller proportion of Syrah. Luscious cassis, black olive, tobacco leaf, graphite and earthy notes define the flavour profile with a very long, lingering finish. A rich full body, firm tannins and great structure make this a perfect wine to hold in the cellar for another decade or so.
A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!
