San Giusto a Rentennano La Ricolma 2012

Decant to eliminate some slight sediment and to aerate the wine if consuming before the drinking window.

La Ricolma is considered the companion wine to Percarlo, San Giusto a Rentennano's signature wine. While Percarlo is Sangiovese based, La Ricolma is 100% Merlot that is harvested from many vineyard sites. The vinification regimin follows the same standards as Percarlo, but even smaller quantities of the wine are produced. This leads some to believe that La Ricolma is actually their signature wine.

On the nose, expect dark fruit notes with a spicy oak edge. When tasting, a bold blackberry and dark cherry start is followed by wonderful clove and vanilla spice. It is aged in French oak barrels for 20 – 22 months which produces tannins that are firm but not overly aggressive. They soften on the finish, intermingling nicely with the clove spice and giving a lush velvety sensation.

When pairing food with this wine, consider gamier meats like lamb and venison. Grandma’s classic venison and Italian beef stew would be perfect.

San Giusto a Rentennano is certified organic and continues to harvest the majority of their grapes by hand. They also produces a Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Vin Santo, which are regarded with high esteem.
